Chapter Overview

“Conquering the Summit” presents the resilience of Indian mountaineer Arunima Sinha, who rebuilt her life after losing a leg and became the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest. The account combines personal determination with training, teamwork and expert support.

Learning Objectives

  • trace challenge, preparation, setback and achievement;
  • identify qualities through biographical evidence;
  • discuss disability and achievement respectfully;
  • review parts of speech and articles;
  • write a formal request related to an excursion or club.

Key Concepts

| Concept | Explanation | |---|---| | Biography | A factual account of a person's life written by someone else. | | Resilience | Capacity to recover, adapt and continue after difficulty. | | Summit | Highest point of a mountain; also a metaphor for an ambitious goal. | | Teamwork | Coordinated work in which climbers, guides and support systems share responsibility. |

Detailed Explanation

From trauma to a goal

After a serious incident in 2011, Arunima Sinha underwent amputation. During recovery she formed the aim of climbing Everest. A sound summary should not leap directly from injury to success: rehabilitation, technical instruction, physical conditioning, funding, equipment and repeated practice filled the gap.

The climb

High-altitude mountaineering demands acclimatisation, judgement and teamwork. Sinha trained under experienced guidance, including at an institute associated with mountaineer Bachendri Pal. She reached the summit of Mount Everest on 21 May 2013. The date marks achievement, but the long preparation explains it.

Reading inspiration responsibly

The account shows agency and resilience without implying that every disabled person must perform an extraordinary feat to deserve respect. Achievement is both individual and supported. Guides, medical workers, trainers, family, institutions and appropriate technology contribute to access.

Beyond a slogan

“Never give up” becomes meaningful only when linked to planning, adaptation, support and safety. Mountaineers sometimes turn back because conditions are dangerous; that can be wise judgement, not failure.

Language Focus

Parts of speech

In “The determined climber moved steadily upward,” determined is an adjective, climber a noun, moved a verb, steadily an adverb and upward an adverb here.

Articles

Use a before a consonant sound (a university), an before a vowel sound (an hour) and the for something specific or unique in context (the summit they had trained for). Article choice depends on sound, not spelling alone.

Writing Skill: Formal Letter

State the purpose in the subject line, give educational benefits, suggest dates or arrangements, acknowledge safety and request action politely. Do not promise permissions or costs you cannot confirm.

Exam Point:

For a biographical answer, connect a quality to a verified decision or stage of preparation. Avoid writing only adjectives such as “brave and great”.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying Sinha climbed Everest immediately after injury.
  • Presenting support as if it reduces her achievement.
  • Choosing a/an from the first written letter rather than sound.

Quick Revision

  • Arunima Sinha set her Everest goal during recovery.
  • Training and a support network made determination practical.
  • She summited Everest on 21 May 2013.
  • The summit is both a place and a symbol of a goal.

Practice Questions

  1. Why is training central to the account?
  2. How can turning back show courage?
  3. Choose: a/an honest climber; a/an uniform.
  4. Give two points for a letter requesting an adventure club.

Answers and Explanations

  1. It converts ambition into technical skill, fitness, risk awareness and preparedness.
  2. It may require resisting pressure and protecting a team when conditions are unsafe.
  3. an honest climber; a uniform.
  4. State educational/fitness benefits and propose supervised, inclusive safety arrangements.
