Chapter Overview

Indian farming combines ecological knowledge, family labour, markets, technology and public policy. Its methods vary with soil, relief, water, climate, crop choice and the resources available to cultivators.

Detailed Explanation

From seed to harvest

Farming commonly involves preparing land, selecting seed, sowing or transplanting, adding nutrients, managing weeds and pests, irrigating where needed, harvesting, threshing, storing and marketing. Each stage requires decisions about cost, labour, weather and risk.

Soils and water

Alluvial soils support many crops in river plains; black soils retain moisture and are well suited to cotton in parts of the Deccan; red, laterite, desert and mountain soils have different properties. Soil health depends on texture, organic matter, organisms, nutrients and erosion control. Irrigation reduces dependence on immediate rain but excessive pumping can lower groundwater, while poor drainage can cause waterlogging or salinity.

Change and continuity

Animal-drawn tools, mixed cropping, seed selection, tanks and community water systems represent long-developed knowledge. Tractors, improved seeds, weather information, drip irrigation and farm machinery can raise efficiency. Benefits and risks depend on scale and use: expensive inputs may increase debt, and unnecessary chemicals can damage soil, water and beneficial organisms.

Towards sustainable farming

Crop rotation, compost, integrated pest management, mulching, water harvesting and diverse crops can conserve resources. There is no single method suitable for every field. Sustainable farming balances reliable production, farmer livelihoods, nutritious food and the long-term health of soil and water.

A careful comparison

Do not label every traditional method sustainable or every modern technology harmful. Judge a practice by evidence: resource use, yield, cost, risk, labour, pollution and local suitability.

Worked Example

Problem: A dry farm loses water rapidly from bare soil. Suggest two responses.

Answer: Mulching can reduce evaporation and suppress weeds, while a drought-tolerant crop or drip irrigation can reduce water demand. The farmer should also consider soil type, cost and water availability.

Exam Point:

For a farming question, connect crop season and local condition. Avoid saying rice or wheat is grown only in one state.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating the three crop seasons as exact nationwide dates.
  • Confusing manure, which adds organic matter, with every chemical fertiliser.
  • Assuming higher short-term yield always means long-term sustainability.
