Chapter Overview

Weather is the short-term condition of the atmosphere at a place. By measuring temperature, rainfall, air pressure, humidity and wind, meteorologists describe present conditions and prepare forecasts.

Detailed Explanation

The atmosphere and weather

The atmosphere is the envelope of gases around Earth. Sunlight heats Earth's surface unevenly. The surface then warms the air above it. Differences in heating help create differences in pressure, winds, clouds and rainfall.

Temperature, humidity and clouds

Air temperature changes through the day and usually reaches its maximum after noon rather than exactly at midday. Humidity describes water vapour in the air. When moist air cools enough, water vapour condenses on tiny particles to form cloud droplets. Droplets or ice crystals that grow sufficiently may fall as precipitation.

Air pressure and wind

Air has weight and exerts pressure. Air tends to move from higher-pressure towards lower-pressure areas, although Earth's rotation, friction and local terrain affect the direction. A wind is named for the direction from which it blows: a west wind comes from the west.

Forecasting

Weather stations, balloons, radar and satellites provide observations. Forecasters combine these data with computer models. Because the atmosphere is complex, a forecast describes the most likely outcome and becomes less certain further into the future.

Weather or climate?

“It rained heavily this afternoon” describes weather. “This region usually receives most of its rain during the monsoon season” describes a long-term climate pattern.

Observation Activity

Record temperature, cloud cover, wind direction and rainfall at the same time for seven days. Use safe, shaded instrument positions. Compare observations, then write one evidence-based pattern without claiming that a one-week record represents the climate.

Important Definitions

  • Weather: atmospheric conditions at a particular place and time.
  • Forecast: a scientific estimate of future weather.
  • Precipitation: water falling from the atmosphere as rain, snow, sleet or hail.
  • Relative humidity: the amount of water vapour present compared with the maximum the air could hold at that temperature.
Exam Point:

When interpreting a weather chart, mention the place, date or time and unit. “The temperature increased by 4°C” is clearer than “it became hotter”.

Common Mistakes

  • Using weather and climate as synonyms.
  • Saying humidity is liquid water floating in the air.
  • Reading wind direction as the direction towards which the wind travels.
